"I can adjust a back on Tuesday, but if nothing else changes, Thursday's back will look a lot like Monday's."

From the author's note

A chiropractor writing a book about food takes some explaining, and Dr. Malkis does it on the first page. The spine does not live alone. It sits inside a body that sits ten hours a day, sleeps six, eats dinner at eleven and carries weight it did not carry a decade ago. Every one of those pounds leans on the lumbar discs and the knees with every step. Adjusting the back helps; changing the pattern around it is what makes the help last.

So the book has three parts. The first teaches the art of stretching: why bodies stiffen, the five kinds of stretching and when each one fits, the rules that keep it safe, and routines built for real lives, from a five-minute desk reset to a 30-day plan. The second is the nutritional counseling Dr. Malkis offers alongside chiropractic care: what wellness coaching actually is, energy and protein explained plainly, functional nutrition, building a customized dietary program, eating in restaurants and on holidays, and what to do on the third day after a slip. The third is forty low-calorie recipes, mostly under thirty minutes, each with calories and protein per serving and a one-line swap for a missing ingredient.

Three promises hold it together: nothing is sold, opinion is labeled as opinion, and no chapter takes longer than a kettle. It was written for the reader who is a little stiff, a little heavier than they would like and a little skeptical of books like this. Those are his patients.

From Chapter 1: Why your body stiffens

Nobody comes into my office complaining that they are stiff. They come in because they can't turn their head far enough to back the car out, or because tying a shoe has become a two-stage operation, or because the lower back "went" while they were lifting nothing heavier than a laundry basket. Stiffness is the thing underneath the thing. If you understand why your body tightens up in the first place, every stretch in this book stops being a chore and starts being a conversation.

That is the whole art, really: learning what your tissues are trying to say, and answering them kindly.
